Yesterday began the first election since more than 20 years in sudan. There are three days of voting. The oppositionpartys call to boycott the vote due to unfair actions taken by the "National Congress Party" of president Omar al-Bashir..
..This conflict is far to complex to be explaint here. So I´m not trying to get to much into the political enviroment. There are much better way´s to get informed about these issues. I just wondered why there is so little to read about this (still existing) major conflict in the massmedia..
Anyway, we run a blog about free music and in this matter there is a connection to sudan: In the forefront of the election the german foreign office helped to realise a compilation whose intention is to "get artists and musicians across Sudan together to write election songs to encourage the people of Sudan to make a mark on their future". The compiation is being distributed across Sudan on audio cassettes, radio and digital. You can download the songs and make a donation at --- www.sudanvotes.com/musichopes ---. I really like the idea of the project even though not all of the featured songs fit to my musical taste. But there are still some pretty good ones! There seems to be an undercurrent about Doc Ish' upcoming project, The First Treatment, some centering around how ridiculous the track listing is for the project and some doubt (considering were six weeks away from release date and no one has heard the LP) that he has been able to assemble the kind of talent that is included on it.There is almost a palpable "mythical" vibe about the project (not like Detox, but you get the picture) and some of the advertised collaborations, most notably "She Did It Again" f/Jay Electronica, Crooked I, Sean Price and Novel and "Is It A Dream" f/Bun B, Talib Kweli and Joe Budden. So are these rumored collaborations indeed real? They are most certainly real and for some proof, here is Doc at a very recent studio session playing Billy Danze (of M.O.P.who also appears on a track on The First Treatment) some cuts from the project, including the first snippet of "Is It A Dream" f/Bun B, Joe Budden & Talib Kweli.

I just found this documentary. Can´t really tell if it´s worth watching, but it seems quite interesting:

In the early 1990's a loose-knit group of likeminded outsiders found common ground at a little NYC storefront gallery. Rooted in the DIY (do-it-yourself) subcultures of skateboarding, surf, punk, hip hop & graffiti, they made art that reflected the lifestyles they led. Developing their craft with almost no influence from the "establishment" art world, this group, and the subcultures they sprang from, have now become a movement that has been transforming pop culture.

Starring a selection of artists who are considered leaders within this culture, Beautiful Losers focuses on the telling of personal stories. It speaks to themes of what happens when the outside becomes "in" as it explores the creative ethos connecting these artists and today's youth."

You might know the featured artists from some of the nicest coverart done in the 90´s. Some of them collaborated with musicians like the beastie boys, dj shadow or the mowax posse.. to me, it was at that time, the most thrilling thing to see how that kind of art and music perfectly merged together. I guess it wasn´t just me who got influenced by these foreword looking guys..
